The
town of Aberdeen (1857) is set against the backdrop of the Camdeboo
Mountains. It is a
treasure chest of Victorian architecture, and, with many of the houses
dated before 1890, it has been declared an Architectural Conservation
town. Many of the houses are richly decorated and intricately designed
with domes, gables, turrets, ‘broekie lace’ and plaster motifs.
One
of these is the former De Denne, a Victorian/Edwardian style building,
architecturally designed by Steinhobel, and built in 1894, by Enslin,
a local lawyer and Member of Parliament at the time.
The
property is listed as an ‘A’ grade historic building with the
University of Port Elizabeth and the detailed contrasting Gothic
towers bear testimony to Steinhobel’s architectural brilliance.
